Halifax Parks

Halifax over the years, has been a city of gardens and nature parks, as were & are many Canadian cities. Some of the best known Halifax gardens have been Thornfield, Downs' Zoological Gardens and The Public Gardens. The latter is perhaps the finest example of any Victorian garden still in existence in North America. It was first established in the 1840s and today still has its paths, flowers, statues, bandstand, and duck pond. The first indoor skating rink in North America was once there.

These types of gardens are not within the scope of this series of articles because Closed Canadian Parks mainly concentrates on those parks which had amusement rides or other attractions that might be of interest to the amusement park/ride buff typically visiting the CEC website.

Consideration of the above point, makes Downs' unacceptable (or borderline at the most), for this webpage. However, it's included here because it influenced Woolnough's Pleasure Grounds on McNab's Island, may possibly have had some amusements, and was a principal reason Woolnough's finally went public. Included in the Woolnough's article is Redmonds Pleasure Grounds. One other Halifax park which is profiled is Findlay's Pleasure Grounds. It too, was on McNab's Island.
