REMEMBERING THE ST. LOUIS WORLD'S FAIR (1973)

By Margaret Johanson Witherspoon. This book describes how the
fair project was authorized and funded, how the fair
president (David Francis) organized the efforts to build the
fair, and describes the opening day ceremonies. The Fair's
pavilions and major features, along with some state and
country buildings are described. The arts of the fair,
represented in sculpture, paintings, music, and floral
displays are all covered here as well. The closing of the
fair and what happened to the buildings and exhibits are
discussed. Over 100 pictures and drawings are shown, along
with a detailed, two-page map of the grounds. A transparent
overlay of present-day Forest Park may be placed over the
        grounds map. *(Not Reviewed.)

(including Ferris's giant wheel that first ran at the 1893
World's Fair), and gives numerous additional facts about the

A WORLD ON DISPLAY 1904 (1997)
"Photographs From the St. Louis World's Fair"

By Eric Breitbart. In 1904, St. Louis hosted a world's fair
to which were brought some 2,000 native people from around
the world. They took part in the most extensive
anthropological exhibits ever assembled for a world's fair.
The author has assembled seventy-five photographs of these
"living exhibits" and explores what the photographs
represented when they were made, how they were used, and
what significance they hold for viewers today.
