ALTON TOWERS: A GOTHIC WONDERLAND (1999)

great house, from its beginnings as a hunting lodge, to its
completion as the largest privately-owned house in Europe.
The book shows that Alton Towers was a pleasure park many
years before the arrival of the "Corkscrew" roller coaster
        in 1980. *(Not Reviewed.)

ATLANTIC CITY: (1979)
  "125 Years of Ocean Madness"

By Vicki Gold Levi. A pictorial history of Atlantic City, New
Jersey, a seashore resort that had its heyday in the 1920s,
30s and 40s, then fell on hard times as cheap air travel,
backyard pools and Disney proliferated. Of particular interest
to amusement buffs are photos of the boardwalk and amusement
piers, including Steel Pier, complete with the original
        Dancing Waters, the High Diving Horse and Water Circus;
Tilyou's Steeplechase Pier (a smaller copy of the Coney Island
one); and Young's Million Dollar Pier. *(The text is
informative and well-written, and the photo reproductions are
very good - slightly better in the original than the reprint.)

THE BEACH IN PICTURES 1793 - 1932 (1988)

By Mary Campbell and Barbara Myrvold. This details The Beaches
area of present-day eastern Toronto, Canada, starting with the
development of the area when it was divided into lots in 1793.
It progresses into the 19th and 20th centuries with some of
the amusement parks that sprang up there. *(Recommended. This
has all that era's parks: Balmy Beach, Kew Gardens, Munro
Park, Scarboro Beach, Victoria Park, and others. Nearby
residential districts are detailed, and there are maps from
several time periods, pictures of each area, and reproductions
of posters & ads, plus a chart of name origins. The only
detriment is the lack of an index.) Thanks to Gabe McMullen of
        Toronto for suggesting this book.

*(The book has the mark of one produced in a short time with
little fact-checking. Its index contains no fewer than 31
references to River Park, only five of which are valid. There
is no mention of the roller coaster. The author gets Elm and
River parks confused. The photo captions for the carousel and
pavilion identify them as being in "Elm Park". To my present
knowledge, Elm Park never had amusements but was a picnic
ground in contrast with the hurly burly of the amusements,
noise, and smells of raucous River Park.) Book suggestion and

THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO SIX FLAGS THEME PARKS (1996)

By Tim and Carrie O'Brien. A guide to help navigate 12 Six
Flags parks, it offers detailed descriptions of their rides,
shows, midway games, gift shops, restaurants, and guest
services. There are also ways to avoid pitfalls such as long
lines and endless walking. *(Recommended. The book is very
complete, with a little history about Six Flags, and a
timeline showing when the parks were opened or bought, and
who built them. A section is devoted to each of the 12 parks
with many full-colour pictures of the rides and attractions.
Overall, I feel it's a great book for anyone who loves Six
Flags. It's a good way to get a wonderful overview, and to
plan a trip if you have never been to one before.) Thank you

________ GREETINGS FROM GRIMSBY PARK (1985) "The Chautauqua of Canada" By Dorthy Turcotte. This book traces the developement of Grimsby Park in Ontario, Canada from its beginnings as a religiuos campground in the 1850s through becoming a full-fledged amusement park by the 19-0s, to its decline in the 1930s and 40s. Includes maps and many photographs. The book is themed as a series of fictional letters between friends as written by a young girl turned grandmother over the lifetime of the park. Within, are details of the history of the park and surrounding area. *(Although there are some errors, the book pretty well gives the story of the park with lots of vintage photographs and reproductions of ads and programs. The story of Olympic Park, in its day one of the largest and most beautiful amusement parks in northern New Jersey. *(Although it's good to see a book about Olympic Park, this doesn't do it justice. The pictures, culled mostly from newspaper clippings, are of relatively poor quality, and the remaining photos unfortunately aren't reproduced well, either. While it's interesting to read about the park's brass band and vocalist, "Bubbles Ricardo", the text is generally dry [unusual for an amusement park book]. The other Rutgers publication, "Palisade Park", is a far better choice; this is for hard-core enthusiasts only.) It mainly deals with Toronto Island as a whole, but does in part discuss the amusements that were on the island. The ferries that serviced those amusement areas are detailed, with particular focus on "Trillium" a 1910 ferry that was restored at a cost of almost $1 million. *(I found this book to be informative, especially about Hanlan's Point, which was the largest amusement park on the island. Lots of pictures punctuate the story of recreation on Toronto Island and the nearby mainland. The story of "Trillium" from its 1910 construction, through service and neglect, to restoration in 1973, and its eventual return to service in 1975 as a historic part of early Toronto life, is well documented with lots of pictures and diagrams.) The story of how a modern theme park (Canada's Wonderland) was planned, financed, and designed, and how various companies and governments became involved. *(This is recommended only to those interested in the nitty-gritty of amusement park politics. The book is somewhat dry but pretty well manages to keep interest as it details an inside look at a park aspect rarely thought about. Of particular interest was the concern over foreign influence in Canada and what it means to its citizens.)
