The following are books devoted pretty much exclusively to the subject of Disney Theme Parks and their influence. The category has been limited by the criteria that our readers are mainly interested in the parks and less so The Disney Organization itself. A local search revealed over 400 titles containing the name "Disney", and this was only within one library system!
Therefore, no books on the Disney family nor other departments of The Disney Company are listed except where a large portion is devoted to one or more of The Disney Parks. Even then, many books do not fall into this category and so have not been listed. Suggestions are welcome. -CEC E-Mail
Be sure to check General Park Books as many of those books have Disney segments. Look at Educational Books for additional looks at Disney construction and architecture. Also see Disney Park Videos.
Note that some of the guide books are reprinted yearly, with updates replacing old information. These have been noted where known, although the reviews will be for the version with the publication date shown next to the title. These will continue to be listed as many libraries keep these guide books for several years, even after an updated version has been received. Since many libraries keep their latest copy as a non-circulating reference book, these older copies may then be placed in circulating status. Even with an older guide book, most of the information will still be useful when planning a trip to a Disney Park.
Prices are usually those at publication time and are subject to change.

________
CELEBRATION U.S.A. (2000)
By Douglas Franz and Catherine Collins. This is the story of
"Celebration", Disney World's planned community. Walt Disney
originally envisioned EPCOT as an "Experimental Community of
Tomorrow", but with his death in 1966 and budget constraints
for Disney World, the project was shelved. EPCOT then became
a "mini World's Fair" of sorts. Then in 1990, the company
decided to revive the idea, using the past rather than the
future. *(Anyone familiar with the Disney organization will
smile at the project's manipulation and control as though it
was just another ride in a theme park. Equally interesting
are Disney's attempts to accommodate (some would say, evade)
environmental concerns, low-income housing requirements,
building codes and zoning ordinances. It's an interesting
story of what happens when a little corporate idealism mixes
with a lot of money, and just how much "social engineering"
can be done with asphalt and lumber.
CELEBRATION U.S.A. (Continued)
I got the impression that the whole shebang was orchestrated
with the simple idea of wringing the last dollar out of what
was otherwise unusable swampland. For example, all the talk
about putting the houses closer together to foster a "sense
of community" was just another way to build a denser
development and thus make a few more bucks. Also, it seems
there was a lot of money spent on architecture, but not quite
enough on foundations, quality building materials. I'm not an
architect or city planner, but I learned more than a few
interesting things about city design along the way.) Book

IMAGINEERING: A BEHIND THE DREAMS LOOK AT

By the Walt Disney Imagineers, foreword by Michael Eisner.
Written by The Imagineers themselves using examples of rides
and shows from the Disney parks throughout the world, this
book explains where they get their ideas and how they develop
them into attractions. *(This is a large 34 x 26 cm, hard
cover, 192-page book that is beautifully done (as it should
be for $68). Throughout the book are tonnes of never-seen-
before pictures, sketches, and models of park attractions. The
models and renderings of some then future attractions like
Tokyo's Disney Seas, Disneyland's California Adventure and
Disney World's Animal Kingdom are included. Although new
pictures and sketches are given, the book doesn't really give
any juicy secrets of the Imagineers away.)

interviews with employees. Over 50 photographs are here that
help illustrate the points brought up. *(To be as charitable
as possible about this, let me simply say that this one is
"for completists only". It's a look at Disney from a
Marxist/Communist/Socialist viewpoint -- or something. There
have been other, far more intelligently written critiques of
Disney (like Richard Schickel's "The Disney Version"). Let's
just say that this was one master's thesis that probably was
better left unpublished. (-: ) Book comment by Seth Briliant

MOUSE TALES: (1994)
"A Behind the Ears Look at Disneyland"
By David Koenig. This book discusses the behind-the-scenes
goings-on at the Disney park with many details not usually
known to the public. *(It's not your typical upbeat, nostalgic
look at Disneyland. In fact, the author seems to delight in
pointing out the problems and troubles of operating the park,
from slightly nutty patrons and employees, to very serious
problems comprising of weather, fires and ride malfunctions
involving bodily injury or death. Nevertheless, it's
interesting for the different perspective it provides, and it
reminds you that while an amusement park is supposed to be
fun, the fun is the result of a lot of hard work, some of
which can be difficult and often dangerous.) Book review by

photographs. Apparently Thomas had the cooperation of the

respect, on the whole the story is told accurately and fairly,
with no punches pulled on some of the less adorable aspects,
like the strike at the Disney studios in the early 1940s, for
example. Of particular interest to amusement park buffs will be
the section on the origin and creation of Disneyland, which is

WALT DISNEY'S RAILROAD STORY (1998)
By Michael Broggie. This book is the history of Walt Disney's
fascination with trains, from the miniature live steam layout
in his backyard to the construction of full-scale railroads
at his theme parks. The author is the son of Roger Broggie,
who became one of the first Imagineers and designed not only
the trains but also many of the other rides in Disneyland.
*(Although I'm not a train buff, I particularly enjoyed the
story (and pictures) of the antique steam trains that Disney
rescued from South America and restored for use in Disney
World. Although this book focuses specifically on Disneyland's
trains, there is plenty of additional information and
photographs of the park. Simply put, if you have even a
passing interest in trains and love Disneyland, then this
