CONEY ISLAND: LOST & FOUND (2002)

By Charles Denson. This is a profusely illustrated history of
Coney Island, bursting with photos, postcards and other
memorabilia. *(The reproduction is excellent, and the
accompanying text is equally good - detailed without being
boring. This is the best treatment of Coney Island we are
likely to see for quite a while. Highly recommended, my only
complaint is that it's not available in hardcover.)

THE KID FROM CONEY ISLAND (2001)

By Woody Register. A biography of Frederick Thompson, who
created Luna Park at Coney Island, New York. *(Not
Recommended. This biography could have been a fascinating
glimpse into the early history of Coney Island and one of the
first great amusement parks. Instead, it's a tedious trip
through a great deal of sociology and theorizing about
changes in Victorian attitudes, etc. Unless you enjoy panning
for gold nuggets, I'm not sure it's worth the effort.) Book
