park, and everyone went there. Gone but far from forgotten, the

BILLION DOLLAR FUN (1998) NTSC
This concentrates on theme park simulators, stunt shows, and
animatronic-style rides. Film, set, lighting, and effects designers
discuss their craft in detail. There is also an analysis of visitors
regarding what they are looking for in these types of shows, and why
they come back. *(Recommended. The detail is above average for this
type of production and I liked the discussion of effects development
for attractions like "Terminator" and "Twister". A special treat was
the preview of Islands of Adventure which is a combination of theme
park amusement rides and stunt/effects shows.)

BILLION DOLLAR FUNFAIRS (1998) PAL
This documentary is about motion picture-related theme parks and the
development of their attractions. It has a preview of Universal's
"Islands of Adventure" and also discusses a former Walt Disney
Company executive who is planning to convert a film studio in

Long before the days of giant theme parks, the United States had
many amusement parks where families gathered for a cool escape on
a hot summer day. This program celebrates these pre-Disney parks,
visiting places like Playland in Rye, New York, Holiday World in
Santa Claus, Indiana, and California's Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk,
where vacationers can still reach for the brass ring on the
merry-go-round. The special also checks out some old wooden roller

"Amusement Parks of the United Kingdom"
Featured here are existing models of past amusement rides in The
UK that have mostly disappeared from the North American scene.
See the "Virginia Reel", Funhouses, Dark Rides, "Steeplechase",
"Noah's Ark's", and much, much more. Nine parks and twelve coasters
are visited, with on-ride views of the coasters shown. *(A well-
crafted video with good contrast images and sound. Many almost-lost
rides are featured along with lots of funhouse and dark ride inside
views. The only complaints are lack of a steady-cam setup for the
on-ride coaster views and some captions are not on the screen long
enough.) Recommended, especially for vintage ride and funhouse fans.
