________ CONEY ISLAND (1991) NTSC This documentary traces New York's Coney Island from its early days when it was an island served by side-wheel steamers, through the first part of the century when it was referred to as "Sodom By the Sea", to modern day. All the early entrepreneurs and showmen are profiled and their contributions documented in photos and moving pictures. *(Recommended. Lots of historical footage here documents the good, the bad, the great, and the tasteless as you are taken on a tour of the ages of what was, and what is, Coney Island.) The first tape covers 1917 to 1936, and features "Coney Island" (1917) with Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle and Buster Keaton. Then it's on to 1927 for some amusement park thrills. A 1930 visit shows talking pictures from Coney with more excitement and a sing-a- long, again from 1930, on the fun of getting to Coney. The tape ends with a chimp and his young master as they have a swinging time at Luna Park. Volume 2 covers 1936 to 1955 and starts with a comedy, then presents four documentaries on Coney through the period. One seriously looks at the decay setting in and ponders the future, which has almost come true. The last film "Coney Island U.S.A.", a Venice Film Festival Winner in color gives us a final touching look. *(Not Reviewed.)
