                                ________

THE BIG TOP (1952)
"My Forty Years With The Greatest Show On Earth"

By Fred Bradna & Hartzell Spence. A biography of Fred Bradna,
the Ringling Brothers/Barnum & Bailey ringmaster from 1913 to
1946. *(This is one of the finest circus histories with
wonderful first-hand descriptions of many legends, including
Lillian Leitzel & Alfred Codona, the Concellos, clowns Lou
Jacobs & Otto Griebling, the Wallendas, bandmaster Merle
Evans, and others. There are great photos, some of which
apparently have not been published before or since. Detailed
are the hazards of circus life. There were tent blowdowns,
travelling troubles, dangers of living with wild animals and
so on. He pulls no punches about the 1944 circus tent fire in
Hartford, Connecticut that burned hundreds of people, mostly
children. Many of the acts were extremely dangerous, making
it exciting for the audience, but it sometimes resulted in
tragedy and death for the performers. The Ringling show had
very few ringmasters over the years. To have held that post
and hold the show together, night after night and year after
year, was quite an achievement. This book would be a fine
addition to any circus buff's collection.) Review is courtesy
of Seth Briliant of Atlantic City, New Jersey.

                                ________

THE CIRCUS FIRE (2000)

By Stewart O'Nan. This is a detailed story of the bad 1944
fire in Hartford, Connecticut, at the Ringling Brothers\
Barnum & Bailey big top. This book is invaluable for the true
student of circus history, as it covers an unbelievable
incident in its past. (It deals with a terrible catastrophe in a
frank and straightforward manner; accordingly, it should be, and
is, absolutely horrific. It is not for the squeamish and I
certainly would not recommend it for bedtime reading. However,
the story itself is very dramatic, the photographs are well
reproduced, and my guess is that much of this material is
being made public for the first time. It also offers an
interesting and well-researched conclusion as to the cause of
the fire (it may well have been arson), a fact of which I was
previously unaware.) Book suggestion and review are courtesy
of Seth Brilliant of Atlantic City, New Jersey, U.S.A.

RINGMASTER! (1989)

By Kristopher Antekeier. This is the story of a professional
actor who became the ringmaster of the Ringling Brothers/
Barnum & Bailey Circus for the 1986 season. *(Anyone who has
ever dreamed of "running away with the circus" should find
this book quite interesting! Kris details how he got the job
from Kenneth Feld, now the show's owner, and how he worked to
gain the acceptance and trust of the circus troupe. As anyone
who has ever M.C.'d a program knows, it's not always easy to
keep the show moving, and you've got to think very quickly on
your feet sometimes. This is a fascinating story and a
reminder that the circus life, although glamorous, is still a
very hard life. For most of us, "The show must go on" is just
a cliche; for circus people, it is a rule that must be
obeyed, no matter what the cost, and sometimes the costs are
quite high. A wonderful, well-written book, complete with some
wonderful candid pictures, and a fine sequel and companion
volume to Fred Bradna's "The Big Top".) Book suggestion and
review is courtesy of Seth Briliant of Atlantic City, New
        Jersey.
